Frugal Gardening 101: Giant Vegetables!

This is the giant vegetables episode of the Frugal Gardening update.  I should probably start by explaining that, for the last week or so, Mr. SillySimple and I have been on vacation out of state.  It was a fabulous vacation!  But we are also happy to be back doing our thing (I can’t be the only one who starts to miss my own bed after a few days?).  The first day back in the garden was quite the surprise, though.  The weather here has been hot-hot-hot, and rainy in the evenings, pretty much ideal growing conditions for heat-loving summer vegetables. When we came back we were greeted with some pretty hardy vegetables.

Giant Veggies

From left to right-- crookneck squash, cucumber, Diet Coke (you have no idea how long that took to ripen), zucchini

We had been picking and eating these veggies very regularly when they were small in size, but since we were way things got a little out of hand.  The vegetables are surprisingly tasty given their size (the word on the street is that letting these types of veggies get too large reduces flavor), but I think that I definitely prefer a smaller-sized vegetable.  Stay tuned next week when I discuss our experiments (some good, some bad) with food preservation.

  1. Those are very big! How amazing things can get as large as that. So, do you really taste a difference?

When the squash (both zucchini and crookneck) get big like that the insides have fully formed seeds that need to be scraped out before cooking (like a pumpkin), it changes the whole texture and flavor of the squash. The cucumber isn’t as complicated, I just prefer it smaller.

Just visiting from Finer Things. I’ll be checking in next week to read more about your food preservation. We’re trying some new things this year. Maybe we can get some ideas from your experiments!

  3. What kind of seeds did you use to get such a nice Diet Coke? I wonder if there’s a regular version of them, too? I could do with a whole garden of cola. Oh…maybe I’d dedicate parts of it to lemonade and coffee…
I’m (im)patiently waiting for tomatoes and cucumbers. I hope I get at least one cuke as nice as yours looks. I’m not much of a gardener, but I keep trying!

boy, do I hate it when the veggies get away from me! I can’t usually bring myself to toss them, so I end up cutting all the big seeds out and doing something with them…grumbling all the way! 😉
