Frugal Gardening: Seed Starting Part III

I have been thinking a lot about seed starting over the last few weeks… first it was the ice cube tray seed starters, then the egg cartons pulled out of the recycling bin, then I stumbled on this instructional video about creating seed starter pots from recycled news paper and just had to give it a try.

  • Yesterday’s newspapernewspaper
  • Straight edged drinking glass or glass jar
  • nothing else

Step 1: Start out by wrapping the newspaper around the outside of the glass and folding the edges back inside of the glass.Glass with newspaper on top

Step 2: Remove the glass.  You can use the bottom of the glass to force the folded over edges down to create the bottom of the pot.Newspaper Seed Starter

I LOVED this project, these are addictive pots to make, I sat down to create just one of these to take photographs of and ended up making half a dozen just because it was so much fun I didn’t want to stop.

That does look addictive! I don’t do any gardening, but I’m trying to come up with an excuse to make these anyways. Thanks for sharing.

soo, I want to make one (or more) of these, but one problem, I need a bigger one for my Flower Rocket (as seen on tv…) that I bought. It is alot bigger than a regular glass tho. Any ideas what I could use instead?

      Hi Burgandy,
Sounds like you need something a little bit wider than the average drinking glass. What about using a small cookie tin left over from Christmas, or a round coffee container? You could try it with any empty round container really! Come back and let us know how it works for you
